Learning through the term

Pre-Nursery/ Nursery

Pre-Nursery/ Nursery

We have had a fantastic Term 4 in Pre-Nursery/Nursery! The children were incredibly busy as we split our time between exploring the past and discovering the magic of nature. During the first half of the term, our little learners became historians and explorers. We travelled back to the era of the Dinosaurs and explored the concept of “A Long Time Ago”.

We then turned our attention to the magic of growth and the wonders that can be found in gardens. From planting tiny seeds to showing curiosity towards insects, we were very excited about our learning opportunities.

Beyond our topics, this term was a truly milestone moment for our school community as we celebrated the 30th Anniversary of our school! The children took part in a variety of special anniversary activities. It was a joy to see them collaborating with friends from across the school, showing great confidence in a new environment.

As we finish Term 4, we have been looking back at the incredible progress the children have made. Across the past four terms, we have watched their communication skills flourish, their physical coordination grow, and their friendships deepen.

Reception

Reception

This term, our “Community” and “Natural World” topics truly came to life when we received a very special delivery. The children have been busy writing to and receiving letters from Greenpeace! This incredible real-world link has sparked wonderful conversations about how we can care for our planet.

From using their phonics to write “pledges” to the Earth, to discussing how we can protect the habitats of our favourite minibeasts, the children have shown such empathy and passion. It has been a fantastic way to see their mark-making and early writing take on a truly global meaning!

Our Reception stars took to the stage this term for a very important cause: saving our oceans! Following our letters from Greenpeace, the children led a moving assembly about the impact of plastic pollution on sea creatures, especially the magnificent whale. From acting out the “Rainbow Fish” to sharing their “top tips” for reducing plastic at home, the children spoke with such confidence and heart. It was wonderful to see our youngest learners becoming such passionate advocates for the natural world. A huge thank-you to all the parents who joined us and helped the children feel like real-life eco-heroes!

Year 1

Year 1

It has been a whirlwind of a term in Year 1, and we are incredibly proud of the amazing progress the children are making every single day! Reflecting during Parents’ Day, it was wonderful to see how much their writing has flourished since September; most recently, they’ve written passionate letters inspired by Somebody Swallowed Stanley to advocate for plastic-free oceans.

Beyond their literacy, our young learners have been “thinking like scientists” to classify animals as mammals, reptiles, or amphibians. In computing, they developed basic PowerPoint skills during Term 3, and now they are mastering digital art this term. Their growth – both in the classroom and across the wider curriculum – has been very exciting to see!

In maths, the children have dived into the world of fractions for the first time. They started by using Numicon to master doubles and halves. We’ve also been busy using counters and dienes to find a half and a quarter of various amounts, with a big focus on valuing the process rather than just racing to the answer. We have strengthened our number fluency by focusing on skip-counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s, alongside building lightning-fast recall of their doubles and halves.

Year 2

Year 2

In Terms 3 and 4, Year 2 have had a busy and exciting time full of learning and discovery. One of the highlights was our trip to Saigon Zoo, which linked closely to our Science topic, Animals Including Humans. The children loved observing different animals and thinking about how they grow, move, and stay healthy.

In class, we also carried out a range of fun experiments to help us understand the importance of exercise and how germs can spread. These hands-on activities helped bring our learning to life and encouraged lots of thoughtful discussions.

In English, the children produced some fantastic writing inspired by the stories Mulan and Amazing Grace. They worked hard to create detailed descriptions, imaginative leaflets, and engaging invitations, showing great creativity and progress in their writing skills.

Overall, it has been a wonderful couple of terms, and we are very proud of all the children’s hard work and enthusiasm.

Music, PE and Sports Day

Music

Music

It continues to be a both a pleasure and a privilege to teach music to our youngest learners

In Term 3 the Pre-nursery and Nursery children investigated dynamics in music. We explored using our bodies, our voices and the instruments. We even had a go at conducting! This term we have been looking at what it feels like to play together in a band, learning how to take turns and how to listen to each other.

Reception have learned all about pitch and melody using their voices and bodies to explore high and low sounds before putting them together on our instruments. This term we have been further developing our skills in keeping a steady pulse and playing simple rhythms together.

In Term 3 Year 1 looked at music from around the world, learning some African, Malaysian and Polynesian songs. This term we have been investigating simple rhythmic composition through the topic of weather.

Year 2 started 2026 by composing drum patterns using Groove Pizza. We then wrote a rap about things we like to do and performed it over our drumbeat. This term we have been investigating the pentatonic scale, learning to play a piece on our glockenspiels before improvising.

PE and Sports Day

PE

It’s been a high-energy term for our Reception and Key Stage 1 students! Building on the fundamental movement skills learned in Reception, our KS1 pupils have been leveling up their coordination.

While continuing to master the art of throwing and catching, the children have also begun the exciting challenge of using tennis rackets. It’s been wonderful to see their focus and hand-eye coordination develop as they get to grips with these new skills.

We had a fantastic Sports Day on the Nha Be campus! Our KS1 students showed incredible energy and sportsmanship as they competed in Rob the Nest, relay races, and the obstacle course. A special mention goes to Bean Bag Golf, which was a clear favourite among the children! Well done to all those who participated for their hard work, and a huge thank you to the parents for coming along to cheer everyone on and make the day so special.

Community, celebration and values

School Council

In Term 4, the Student Council members set a great example for their fellow students by showing how to wait patiently for their turn when tidying up their trays and by using polite words such as “please” and “thank you” when asking for something. These actions reflect the strong values and good manners we promote at ABCIS, while also helping students learn about personal space and develop their independence.

Well done, Student Council members—keep being positive role models for your peers and continue helping to make our school a respectful, kind, and welcoming place for everyone.

They were also great helpers to the younger children during our ‘Women’s Day’ activity, where they taught and helped them make flowers and write messages for the special women in their lives. It was a wonderful experience, as these young minds helped others understand how important women are and the special role they play in their lives.

Book Week

Another year of fun and excitement filled our Book Week celebration at the TS Campus. We had many enjoyable activities throughout the week, including ‘Guess the Character,’ ‘Scavenger Hunt’ and teachers reading stories. Of course, we can’t forget our ‘Potato Character competition’ and the ‘Book Week Posters’.

The celebration ended with children and teachers dressing up as their favourite characters. The children had a fantastic week where they explored different stories, used their imagination, and showed their creativity. They were excited to share their favourite books and characters with their friends. It was wonderful to see everyone engaged, enthusiastic, and developing a deeper love for reading.

Awards, Shoebox Appeal and Inclusion Week

Congratulations to our Term Two and Three KS1 Challenge Award winners! These awards celebrate students’ achievements across key subjects, awarding recognition for excellence, effort or progress in reading, writing, Mathematics, and Science.

We were incredibly proud to run our annual Tết Shoebox Appeal again this year. Thanks to your generosity, we exceeded last year’s target. Ensuring every child received a shoebox to enjoy during the Lunar New Year. With the help of Key Stage 2 and 3 students, we delivered the boxes to children in our local community. Seeing their smiles made it a truly memorable experience. It is this spirit of generosity that makes ABCIS such a caring and supportive community and truly reflects our core values of Achieving, Belonging, and Caring.

In Term 3, we celebrated Inclusion Week to show that every student and family belongs at our school. It was a wonderful time to learn about each other and celebrate what makes us all unique! The children also talked about how to be fair when playing games and make sure everyone feels included.

Celebrating our 30th Anniversary

30th Anniversary

A major highlight this term was our visit to the Nha Be campus to celebrate a massive milestone in our school’s history. Dressed in our vibrant house T-shirts, the children radiated school spirit as they learned their house chants and took part in birthday-themed classroom activities.

The day culminated in a truly special moment: the entire school community – from our youngest EYFS learners to our Year 13 students – standing together on the field to form a giant “30” for a commemorative photo. It was a powerful day of unity that brought us all together to honor three decades of excellence.

Questions parents ask when choosing an international school in Ho Chi Minh City

Is ABCIS a good international school in Ho Chi Minh City?

ABCIS is a strong choice for families seeking a British international school in Ho Chi Minh City. The school has been established since 1995, teaches the National Curriculum of England in English, offers IGCSE and International AS/A Levels, and supports academic excellence, personal growth and holistic development.

What makes ABCIS different from other international schools?

ABCIS offers a full British curriculum pathway from Early Years through to A Levels, with a supportive school community, smaller class sizes, a clear academic pathway, internationally recognised qualifications and a focus on Achieving, Belonging and Caring.

What age groups are in EYFS and KS1?

EYFS supports children in the Early Years Foundation Stage up to age 5. Key Stage 1 is typically for children aged 5 to 7 and includes Year 1 and Year 2.

Which campus supports EYFS and KS1 students at ABCIS?

The Trung Son Campus supports Early Years and KS1 students. It includes well-appointed air-conditioned classrooms and age-appropriate facilities such as a swimming pool, sports field, modern playground, sleep room, soft play room, dining hall, library and music room. The school is currently planning a new Primary Campus, which represents a major investment in the future of its younger learners.

Why should parents book a visit to ABCIS?

A school visit helps families see the learning environment, meet the admissions team, ask questions about the British curriculum pathway and understand how ABCIS supports children academically, socially and emotionally.

How does ABCIS support young learners in EYFS and KS1?

The ABC International School (ABCIS) supports young learners in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Key Stage 1 (KS1) through a structured, British-based curriculum that balances academic foundations with social-emotional development. Their approach is centered at the Trung Son Campus, which is specifically designed and equipped for children aged 2 to 7.

Is ABCIS suitable for international and expat families in HCMC?

ABCIS is a multinational, non-denominational day school for native and non-native English-speaking students. The school community includes students from many nationalities and the programme is delivered in English while recognising the Vietnamese context.

What curriculum does ABCIS follow?

ABCIS follows the National Curriculum of England, including the EYFS framework for early learning and a British curriculum pathway that leads to internationally recognised IGCSE and International AS/A Level qualifications.

How does ABCIS create a positive feeling of belonging for children?

ABCIS fosters a strong sense of belonging by cultivating a “family-like” atmosphere where academic excellence is balanced with deep social and emotional support. Because the Trung Son Campus is dedicated specifically to children aged 2–7, the school can create a “small school” feel where every child is known and valued.

How can families start the admissions process at ABCIS?

Families can book a visit or contact the admissions team. Admission decisions are made following entrance assessments and an interview with a member of the Senior Management Team, with interviews arranged in advance through the school office.
